Daredevil in Echo: Is He The Same Netflix Variant? Is Season 1 MCU Canon?

Daredevil is confirmed to appear in Echo. But after the latest trailer featuring both Matt Murdock and Kingpin, fans are left asking if they are the same versions that appeared in Netflix’s Daredevil. Are those seasons canon to the MCU? Here’s all you need to know.

Is Daredevil in Echo the same variant from Netflix?

The new trailer of Echo teases that Matt Murdock and Kingpin from Netflix’s Daredevil are the same versions that appear in Echo.

It was initially believed that the versions of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk who appeared in She-Hulk and Hawkeye respectively are variants of the Netflix versions. Both the characters felt slightly different and stronger than before. But the above Echo trailer released recently shows scenes from Daredevil season 1.

We see flashback footage of young Kingpin and Matt Murdock from Daredevil Season 1, which makes it seem that the two characters continue their story from the first 3 seasons of Daredevil.

Is Netflix’s Daredevil canon to the MCU?

As per the recent Echo teaser, Netflix’s Daredevil is canon to the MCU.

Since Echo uses the same footage from Netflix’s Daredevil (which is now streaming on Disney Plus), this can be seen as confirmation that Daredevil and possibly all the previous Netflix Marvel shows are canon to the MCU.

But it is also possible that Marvel just used old footage to hype up fans for Echo, and the new series will not use any footage from Daredevil. After all, Marvel has used different scenes in trailers and final cuts in the past as well. In that case, the Netflix Daredevil seasons may not be canon to the MCU.

It’s also worth noting that if the Daredevil series turns out to be MCU canon, then that would open a big can of worms for Marvel and create multiple plot holes. Firstly, fans will question Dardevil’s lack of notoriety in the MCU and where he was during key events like Civil War, Infinity War, or Endgame.

Secondly, since Daredevil interacted with Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones in Defenders, their stories will automatically become canon to the MCU as well. That could create complications as Alfre Woodard played Mariah Dillard in Luke Cage and a different character in Captain America: Civil War. Similarly, Mahershala Ali played Cottonmouth in Luke Cage and will soon be leading his MCU-centric movie as Blade.

So to prevent those plot holes, the MCU’s Daredevil has to be different from the Netflix version. But if Echo uses old footage from Netflix’s Daredevil, then fans may have to accept that only some parts of the old Daredevil series are MCU canon, while others aren’t.
